Greening the West marked the launch of its strategic plan with a tree planting ceremony at the Whitten Oval reserve on 1 November 2013. The regional partnership aims to promote sustainable and healthy communities in the western metropolitan area by increasing urban greening.
Member for Western Metropolitan Region, Andrew Elsbury said Greening the West aligns with the State Government’s Living Victoria policy goals to create sustainable, liveable and productive communities across the state.
“There are well documented benefits of vegetation, including street trees and green open space, on the liveability of communities – and Greening the West is squarely aimed at tackling the lack of trees, vegetation and urban green spaces in the western suburbs of Melbourne,” Mr Elsbury said.
The strategic plan outlines Greening the West’s vision, goals and targets, and highlights the benefits of urban greening for our community.
It provides a regional framework that each council can work within and serves as a guide for decision making around matters of urban habitat and green space.
