Green Initiatives in the West – Healthy Urban Habitat

Green spaces create more liveable suburbs, a cleaner environment and contribute to improved community health.

Greening the West aims to positively impact the health status, climate and environment of Melbourne’s west by increasing the tree canopy cover and vegetation through its suburbs.

Melbourne’s western suburbs are some of the fastest growing areas in Australia. They are also drier and often warmer than other parts of Melbourne. As the population increases, so too does pollution, heat and pressure on the environment.

Trees and vegetation are vital components for liveable, healthy suburbs and provide many health, environmental and economic benefits.

Greening the West is a collaborative program between the following partners:

  • City West Water
  • Brimbank City Council
  • City of Melbourne
  • City of Yarra
  • Department of Health
  • Department of Sustainability and Environment
  • Hobsons Bay City Council
  • Hume City Council
  • Maribyrnong City Council
  • Melbourne Water
  • Moonee Valley City Council
  • Parks Victoria
  • Shire of Melton
  • Urban Development Institute of Australia
  • VicRoads
  • Western Melbourne Regional Development Australia Committee
  • Western Water
  • Wyndham City Council
  • Yarraville on the Nose Community Group.

    Hi Clare,
Good to have a website independent of CWW for this work.
I look forward to seeing how it rolls out.

Thank you for providing feedback on the new website featuring the Greening the West Project. City West Water has created the site to showcase the many community and other projects contributing to a greener west.

Hi HUHabitat…went to the forum and found it very interesting. Great to see things happening in the West.
Just introducing ourselves & letting you know of our existance at a grass roots gardening level. We are a local group called Shoestring Gardening Inc
We are a not for profit organisation that helps to encourage backyard food gardens. We help to educate our community through workshops and activities & share knowledge. We provide cheap gardening resources such as seedlings, seeds, hay bales and help in establishing low cost raised garden beds for no dig gardening using recycled materials. For information email:
